“As a Gospel singer, I was paid $5,000.” Simi, an Afrobeat musician, explains why she abandoned Gospel music

Simisola, also known as Simi, a Nigerian Afrobeat singer, and songwriter, has revealed why she left Gospel music for the Afrobeat genre.

She revealed this while appearing as a guest on MTV Base Africa’s Official Naija Top 10 show, where she stated that she was paid between 5k and 10k most of the time she performed in churches.

According to her statements, she revealed that a lack of financial resources was the primary reason she abandoned the Gospel genre for Afrobeat, recalling that the maximum amount she earned during this time period was $70,000.00.

Adding to her admission, she amazingly revealed that despite being underfunded, she still paid a 10% tithe to her church.

Her words:

“I actually used to go to a lot of churches to perform. They will pay me like N5k, N10k. Do you know the highest amount of money I actually collected when I was doing gospel [music]? N70,000. And I felt like I had arrived. I still paid a 10 percent tithe from the money.”

Nigerians couldn’t hold their nerves and reacted massively via all the social media platforms.
